Cathedral Rock Overview
Cathedral Rock is a short 1.2 mile out and back at the south end of Sedona. The formation is visible from around town and easy to spot from State Route 179, which makes this one of Sedona’s most recognizable hikes.
Getting To Cathedral Rock and Parking
Enter Cathedral Rock Trailhead in your map app and it will appear. Several trails reach Cathedral Rock, so if you want a longer outing you can start from alternate trailheads. The main access is off Back O’ Beyond Road, where there are two lots. A parking permit is required at both—do not forget to display it. Rangers are active in this area.
The Sedona Shuttle
The Cathedral Rock trailhead lot is closed to the general public whenever the Sedona Shuttle is operating; it reopens once shuttles are out of service. During shuttle hours, park free at the North SR-179 Park & Ride and ride Route 15 to the trailhead. Typical service is Thursday–Sunday, about 7:00 a.m. to ~5:10 p.m., with extra days during spring break and some holidays—always check the current schedule before you go. Outside shuttle hours, limited trailhead parking is first-come, first-served, and a Red Rock Pass or Interagency Pass is required.

Hiking Cathedral Rock
In roughly 0.6 miles you gain almost 700 feet to the saddle. Basket cairns mark the route; watch for them to avoid wandering onto social paths. The climb is steep with hands-on sections, and after rain or snow a thin layer of sand can make the rock slick. Move carefully and test your footing.
At the Top: Photo Spots
You will reach an End of Trail sign at the saddle. From here:
-
Left (facing the sign): a path wraps behind the formation toward the well-known vortex area. It can funnel wind—use caution. You can descend from the top of the vortex and reconnect with the main trail.
-
Right (facing the sign): a ledge overlooking Oak Creek that’s popular for photos and sunset views. Facing west, the light can be excellent late in the day.
