Lookout Mountain Hike Overview
Located in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, Lookout Mountain is a short but rewarding hike with a steady incline and rocky switchbacks that lead to wide views of the valley. At about 1.2 miles round trip with nearly 470 feet of elevation gain, it’s rated moderate and is a great option if you’re looking for a quick workout hike close to the city. Dogs are allowed, and it’s short enough that families often hike it together, making it a popular local trail year-round.
Getting to the Lookout Mountain Trailhead
Lookout Mountain is in the Moon Valley neighborhood of North Phoenix, between Greenway and Thunderbird. From South Scottsdale, it’s about a 30-minute drive. The main trailhead has a small parking lot, which usually fills quickly on weekends. If the lot is full, there is street parking nearby, but always pay attention to posted “No Parking” signs and be respectful of the residents who live in the area.
You can type “Lookout Mountain Trailhead” into Google Maps or Apple Maps and it will take you directly to the lot.

Hiking the Lookout Mountain Summit Trail
The trail starts with a steady incline and gradually winds upward through a series of switchbacks. While the path is well-defined, you’ll encounter some connecting trails—stay to the left to continue toward the summit. The climb becomes steeper as you gain elevation, with rocky terrain that requires careful footing, especially near the top where the route can be hard to see.
At one point you’ll reach a lookout with sweeping views of the valley below. From here, stay left to continue on the summit route. The final push is the steepest part of the trail, but it’s short and well worth the effort.
Views from the Summit
At the top, you’re rewarded with 360-degree views of the Phoenix metro area. To the east you can spot the McDowell Mountains, while to the south Piestewa Peak and Camelback stand out against the skyline. North Mountain and the rest of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve are visible as well. Sunrise and sunset hikes here are especially beautiful, though parking fills quickly during those times.
Tips for Hiking Lookout Mountain
- Start early. Phoenix temperatures climb quickly, and this exposed trail offers no shade. Avoid hiking midday in warmer months.
- Bring plenty of water. Even though the trail is short, dehydration can happen fast in desert heat.
- Watch for snakes. Rattlesnakes are common in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Always stay on trail, give wildlife plenty of space, and keep dogs leashed.
- Wear proper footwear. The rocky terrain near the summit can be slippery; good hiking shoes make the climb much safer.
- Leave No Trace. Stay on the marked trail, pack out trash (including food scraps), and respect this busy urban wilderness so everyone can enjoy it.
