Finnick’s Hiking & Camping Gear

Outdoorsy Dog Gear: Hiking and Camping

We love to bring Finnick with us on our hikes and trips, but there are several factors we look at before we decide to bring him. First, we look to see if our stay is dog friendly. Whether it’s camping, an Airbnb, or a hotel not everything is always dog friendly! Second, we look to see if the park, trails, and everything we want to do is dog friendly. Lastly, we look to see what type of hike or activity we plan to do. Even though some trails are “dog friendly” we don’t always feel comfortable bringing Finnick. There are a variety of reasons why we might not bring him on a hike that allows dogs. We always consider weather and/or temperature, overgrown desert vegetation that can be sharp and full of spines, wildlife like snakes, coyotes, and mountain lions, and added difficulty for us if we have to hold on to his leash or watch where he is going while also trying to be conscious of our balance and foot placement.

Hiking Gear for Finnick

Medical Kit – We recommend always carrying tweezers with you. This medical kit includes them. It could be helpful if your dog steps on anything where you would need to pull it out

Travel Dog Water Bottle + Dispenser – We love that the water bowl is attached to the bottle

Collapsible Dog Bowl – We use this bowl if we bring food for him on our hike + when we fly

Lavender Scented Earth Rated Dog Poop Bags – We liked to bring scented bags with us when we hike so the poop doesn’t smell when we carry it with us. Please remember to always pack out your dog’s poop when it’s in a bag or not

Camping Gear for Finnick

Hest Dog Bed – We love the Hest Dog Bed for Finnick! There are two layers of high-performance memory foam and it is wrapped in a waterproof liner to provide added protection

Dog Jacket – This is one of our favorite jackets for Finnick when it’s colder out. It’s reversible and has a side that is better for rain

Dog Bowl – We use this solid, 18/8 stainless steel, dog bowl from Yeti at camp, it’s easy to spot and very hard to break if we accidently step on it.

Flea & Tick Collar – When we first started to camp or hike somewhere with the potential of ticks we always put a flea and tick collar on him. Now we give Finnick a once a month flea, tick, and heartworm prevention chewable tablet that he likes.

Dog Food – because Finnick is small and eats dry food, we carry his food in a container, usually a small plastic container with a good sealing lid. We like to repurpose when we can and find the pint sized Talenti Gelato containers to be perfect!

Other Gear

Airline Approved Pet carrier – We love this pet carrier because it is expands and gives Finnick more room on the plane

Hi There!

We're Lauren and Owen -

We started The AZ Hikeaholics as a way to share our adventures with an audience that was interested. It soon grew into a community and we were all in! The more we learned about the history, geology, culture, biology etc, of the places we were exploring, the more we wanted to know.
