THE HIKE:

Lookout Mountain is North of Phoenix. This mountain is in between Greenway and Thunderbird and is in the Moon Valley area. It was about a 30 minute drive from South Scottsdale. There is parking at the trailhead. We got to the trailhead at about 6:15 am. We easily found a spot, but if the parking lot is full there is some street parking. Just be cautious of the signs that say “No Parking”. This mountain is in the middle of a development so be respectful to the people that live there. This hike is great to do with kids or your dogs. We brought our dog with us because it was a cooler morning and we went early. But remember to ALWAYS bring more water than you think you need and DO NOT hike with your dog if it is over 100 degrees. This hike is a steady climb and becomes very steep and rocky towards the end so be sure to have the proper shoes on.

The hike itself is pretty easy to follow. You gain 469 feet in elevation. This trail is rated as “Moderate” on AllTrails. Once you start on the trail you will come across some connecting trails, but stay to the left as you will want to head up to the summit of Lookout Mountain. There are several switchbacks that are relevantly steep. The steepest part is at the end where it is almost hard to see where you head up. Once you reach a part where you have a good lookout view of the valley that is when you will want to stay towards the left and start heading up. This part is steep! Once you reach the top you have a great view of the entire valley. You can see the McDowell’s, Piestewa Peak, and North Mountain.

If you look closely I drew in the switchbacks
This part becomes steep! You head to the left. If you look to the right you will be able to see the valley.
You might think you reached the top at this point but continue onto the trail. You will be able to see the McDowell’s.
